Digital services to citizens

In this case study, we developed a new feature for MijnOverheid with the aim of promoting digital services from government to citizen.

The government and digital services to citizens

The MijnOverheid challenge asks you to design a service that makes it easier for people to do business digitally with the government in a user-friendly or easier way. In our proposal, we assume that it may also mean an intensification of information between governments and citizens.

How does the portal better match what people can and expect? How can a digital government service reach as many citizens as possible with a message (or service or account) from the government? Taking into account that there are also still relatively large groups of citizens who are hardly digitally connected.

Social demographic impression

Submit leave requests quickly and easily in an accessible way, which contains all the data so that HR can process the request quickly. Personal data is stored in accordance with the latest guidelines of the Data Protection Act.

The process of completing and submitting the application, authorizing and processing the leave requests must be quick and smooth.

Solution: development of a user-friendly App

There are 8.7 million people in paid work in the Netherlands. There are 4.2 million people who are not gainfully employed. One in twenty workers has the minimum wage. A few other figures: there are approximately 397,000 unemployed people, 253,000 with WIA benefits. 459,000 are on social assistance. The number of WAO employees is 3.2 million.

The people who have to make ends meet at the bottom of society due to low income are therefore large in number. These people are eagerly looking forward to depositing the monthly salary, or four-weekly earnings. But certainly also to: Child Benefit, Housing Allowance & Care Allowance.

What can governments do “digitally”

Of course, governments cannot run citizens' financial households. Moreover, privacy is becoming increasingly important. Governments can, however, be helpful by communicating payment times clearly and in advance.

Our proposal

Make a notification (notification) about every payment moment. Both digitally via “MijnOverheid” as well as an SMS message (not only for less digitized ones) and an Email. The message states that an amount will be deposited within a few days via (semi) government X. Of course, without mentioning the amount. As stated in the “challenge”, more and more (semi) governments are being connected. Not only deposits, but also accounts can be announced digitally:

  • WW benefit
  • WIA benefit
  • Assistance allowance
  • AOW benefit
  • Council taxes
  • But also tax refunds

Overview of notification options

The overview of the notifications shows all surcharges that relate to the person concerned. The date is the announcement of the notification, the subject shows which surcharge is involved. In the “type” column, you can see at a glance whether it is a charge or a credit. The date of the scheduled charge or credit is shown in the last column.

Below are some concept images that are used as screen examples to further explain the idea.

Setting up a notification

To set a notification, click on the gear icon and the screen will be displayed with the options to set the notification. Here, it is possible to turn notifications on and off quickly and in a user-friendly way and specify the desired type of notification (email/SMS).
